today. >>> a group of newtown residents has formed themselves into a group called newtown united. there is not necessarily people who have been politically active in the past or who have had any experience trying to change policies or get certain law enacted. but some members of newtown united headed to washington today. they took the day off from their jobs. they woke up at dawn. they drove to washington to go meet with members of the brady campaign to prevent gun violence. newtown united, a group of people at the epicenter of national tragedy. one of the parents who traveled to washington today was lucky enough to have his child, who attends sandy hook elementary come home from that school on friday. but he said today that he is taking action now in the wake of the shootings because he does not think the next time it should just depend on luck. >> every time something like columbine, virginia tech were happening, i would avert my eyes, and i will still think that something will be done. but all those believes were shattered on friday. and now i think we all need to speak up. >>

a spokeswoman for the united states postal service is live with us from newtown to give me a sense of just what's happening there. christine, if you can, let me know what you're receiving. what sort of things you're seeing coming in and how much is coming in. >> we started out, ashleigh, receiving a few hundred pieces of mail. and now it's in the thousands every day. it ranges from packages to letters to cards as you say. much of it is becoming express mail. that's how important it is for people to send their love and support to the folks here in newtown to help them cope with the tragedy. >> and not to suggest with that many pieces of mail that you've been able to see. the addresses, who they're coming to, who they're coming from, but can you give me a sense of -- is this from all over the world? is it primarily from here in the united states? and who are they addressing it to? >> some of these packages and letters are addressed simply to the school to the residents of sandy hook, to the first responders, or to families of individual children. they're coming as far away as sicily, england, aus

in the united states. our correspondent who was in japan for cnn for years and years now living in the united states covering newtown, listen to what she had to say about the comparison between those two places. >> i moved back to the u.s. this summer for the last five years, i was living in japan as cnn's tokyo correspondent. in that entire time, i never covered a shooting. there aren't any. this is my third mass shooting i've covered in just six months. i don't have the answer but i can compare japan and the u.s. in japan, there are almost no guns. the average person just can't get one. and i have to tell you, it's the safest place i've ever lived. >> and yet, we can talk about a place that you covered as a journalist, the an toyate killings in norway, 2011, summer camp. 77 people killed most youngsters and norway is a country where it is tough to get a gun. so you can't stop this completely. but people will say if you reduce the number of guns, you'll have fewer of them. here's the thing. this is a country where i can say whatever i want. i can worship any way i want and according to the w

, enough is enough. we heard from chris murphy, senator-elect and the current represent from newtown talking about the community and how they have responded in this small town as the president of the united states said it has been inspirational in terms of how they have dealt with this tragedy from everything from the first responders arriving on the scene to the teachers and administrators and the way they executed the plan that saved lives and who put themselves in the way of the assassin to save the lives of children. we are resolved in our caucus that the time to act is now and that we know taking no action is to be complicit to a future event. we announce today that we will have a task force that will serve to coordinate all of our efforts. we know that this is a comprehensive issue. we know that it is not just restrictions that need to be placed on guns but also the issues of mental illness, the culture of violence, and youth violence specifically. members of our caucus from carolyn mccarthy to grace napolitano to bobby scott and countless others who have been working on these
